Becoming a Sports Trainer

Qualified sports trainers are now in high demand. Sports Medicine Australia provides training and accreditation for Sports Trainers and the National Sports Trainers' Scheme has these components:

1. Sports First Aid Course

This 16-hour course teaches practical first aid skills with an emphasis on sports injuries. The Sports First Aider can help you prevent injuries and be competent in crisis management procedures. The certification lasts three years.

2. Level One Sports Trainers' Course

This 25-hour course is a a progression of the Sports First Aiders course (a prerequisite). The Level One Sports Trainer can help athletes to: help prevent injuries with correct injury assessment; management; referral and apply sports tape. The accreditation lasts three years.

3. Level Two Sports Trainers' Course

This course is for Level One Sports Trainers qualified over 12 months with 50 hours' field experience. It involves a core module plus 35 hours of external modules. The Level Two Sports Trainer can act as a referral point for his/ her athletes and assist in a more involved way with the treatment set by a Sports Medicine Professional. Accreditation lasts three years.
